ALTEX Arctic Cruise
October 7 - November 7, 2001
Tromso, Norway to the Arctic Circle
Mike Pinto writes: After a night of CTD work, I woke up just after 3:00 pm and got down to the lab just as a replay of the Friday buoy test was beginning. Again, no AUV operations could be conducted due to the extremely cold weather conditions (-50 degrees wind chill factor). Welcome to the Artic in late October!
While the galley was preparing a dinner of steak and lobster, we ran through the same drill as Friday’s test. Unfortunately, the results were essentially the same. The buoy chemical reaction began but the buoy burned through only 2 to 3 inches of ice. The buoy was retrieved and the S.S.I. boys went back to work attempting to pinpoint the cause of the failure.
Meanwhile, back up in the science lounge, a group of Healy crew and science team members learned the salsa in a dance class conducted by Mark Simard of NASA JPL. Well, all was not lost.
