Electro Mechanical Technician

Reporting to the Facilities Technician Lead, the incumbent ensures that all MBARI facilities are properly maintained. This includes, but is not limited to, performing all tasks associated with the proper operation of HVAC systems, refrigeration, water treatment, mechanical, automated building controls, and power distribution systems. The E/M Technician performs maintenance and installation duties of all mechanical and electrical systems throughout the facilities. In addition, this individual monitors trends, inspects, analyzes, troubleshoots, and executes building repairs as appropriate.

The E/M Technician conducts preventative maintenance inspections to identify problems and takes necessary action (i.e. services equipment, performs repairs, documents status, etc.). This includes, but not limited to, building systems (HVAC, for example), as well as sensitive equipment such as fire and burglar alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, emergency generators, refrigeration systems, as well as equipment for seawater systems in labs, and a test tank with related equipment.

The E/M Technician must maintain a clean safe working environment. Additionally, this individual cross trains other technicians and staff in preventative maintenance, trouble shooting, and repairs of HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and other areas as appropriate.

The E/M Technician responds to after-hours emergencies and alarms as required.

Minimum high school diploma or equivalent plus a minimum five years related experience required.  Trade school certification or college degree desirable. EPA Refrigerant certification a plus. Solid experience with complex building systems, including HVAC, electrical, mechanical, chillers, boilers, pumps/valves, seawater distribution, air compressors, plumbing, refrigeration, and building management systems. Knowledge and experience with proper and safe usage of hand and power tools. Proven ability to perform repairs. Must be computer literate, due to the fact that many systems throughout the Institute are automated. Ability to read, understand, and work from drawings, specifications, schematics, and technical manuals is required. Must be knowledgeable of local and state building codes and OSHA regulations as they apply to building maintenance, operations, and construction.

The incumbent must possess excellent analytical, organization, and communication skills. Timely  follow-up required. Must be able to effectively and positively work as a team player and alone when necessary. Must be able lift up to 35 lbs.  Must be able to work in confined spaces. Use of ladder is important. May work on rooftops (maintaining filters, for example). Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record is required. Forklift and scissor lift experience desired. Must be able to work with diverse groups of people.
