Participate in a ten-week mentored internship program (June 16 – August 22, 2003) at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, situated in Moss Landing, California, at the head of Monterey Canyon.

With state-of-the-art facilities and equipment that include research vessels, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) which explore the deep ocean, MBARI offers teachers and students unique opportunities to be involved in advanced research and development projects. The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students and teachers.The mission of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute is to serve as a world center for advanced research and education in ocean science and technology. MBARI strives to achieve this mission through the development of better instruments, systems, and methods for scientific research in the deep waters of the ocean. MBARI emphasizes peer relationships between engineers and scientists as a basic principle of its operation. Teams at MBARI use cutting-edge technology to develop equipment, software, and research methods to meet the specific needs of deep-sea research. The focus of the MBARI internship is on the intern’s professional development—learning research techniques and improving communication and collaboration skills. Each intern will have an MBARI mentor who will supervise a specific project. Interns will also  serve as peer-mentors to other interns.

Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation. The cover letter should include a statement of your specific research interests, complete contact details (phone numbers and email address, if available), and relevant coursework and grades received. Potential project descriptions will be available in December and applicants must indicate project preferences in their cover letters.

Deadline: January 31, 2003. Selected candidates will be contacted by the end of February.

Stipend and Housing: There is a weekly stipend of $500 for the 10-week program (June 16–August 22, 2003). Support may be provided for travel to California. Summer interns will be offered assistance in locating housing. Rooms in the Monterey and Santa Cruz areas cost approximately $450-$650/month; food costs approximately $200/month. The Monterey area is a popular spot during the summer, so interns are encouraged to arrange accommodations as early as possible. MBARI may be able to arrange carpool transportation to and from MBARI facilities in Moss Landing.

MBARI is located in Moss Landing on the Central Coast of California, approximately 35 kilometers north of Monterey and 35 kilometers south of Santa Cruz.
