Guide Seamount
Guide Seamount, in the northwest portion of the survey area, is a volcanic constructional feature about 12 million years old. The seamount consists of a series of nearly parallel volcanic ridges aligned parallel to magnetic anomalies in the underlying ocean crust and therefore parallel to the inactive mid-ocean ridge that formed the crust. The lavas from Guide are hawaiite and mugearite composition with some pyroclastic deposits near the summit. It is one of several seamounts along the California and Baja California margin, including Davidson Seamount, that have similar structure and origin. Higher resolution images of Davidson and Guide Seamounts will be presented in MBARI Digital Data Series No. 5.
