MBARI researchers use a variety of laboratory and field techniques to measure chemicals such as nitrate, which serve as "fertilizers" for marine algae and other phytoplankton. Microscopic photosynthetic organisms are at the base of most marine food webs and provide much of the world's oxygen.

In addition to making scientific discoveries, MBARI's scientists and staff work hard to communicate these discoveries to other scientists and to the general public through programs such as the Mysteries of the Deep program at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

MBARI scientists use the latest genetic mapping technologies to identify marine organisms, both in the lab and in the field.

Geologists at MBARI collect and analyze rock samples from deep sea areas, such as undersea volcanic spreading centers, which are accessible only using submersibles.
