Benthic elevator

MBARI researchers use benthic elevators to transport research equipment that is too heavy for a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to carry to or from the seafloor. Transporting equipment to the seafloor is as simple as loading it on the elevator, then allowing the elevator to "free-fall" to the bottom. In many cases, the elevator is sent down carrying "drop weights." After the ROV unloads or reloads the elevator, the drop weights are removed by the ROV or released by an acoustic signal from a ship. This allows the benthic elevator to rise back up to the surface. This particular benthic elevator was used to transport heavy core tubes full of sediment from the Gulf of California.
