Graphs and reports of core properties from shipboard samples taken in Monterey Bay, from 1989-2001.    Time series cruises occurred at approximately 21 days intervals.  From 1989-1992 the cruises occupied 4 stations at which complete sampling was conducted (stations C1, H1, H3, C7), but in 1993 these stations were reduced to 3 along an onshore/offshore transect (stations C1, Mooring1; Mooring2).  Major stations consist of C1, C7, H3, Mooring1, and Mooring2.  (station mapmethods and materials).

TMP_maj_0m_char.jpg (138685 bytes) PROFILE  CHARACTERISTICS

A 3 panel figure of characteristics: Anomalies, Daily Averages, and Seasonal Cycle of physical , biological , and chemical   properties over a 12 year period, from 1989 to mid 2001.  Depths available are: 0, 60, 100, 150, and 200m.

Chemical (nutrient)  profiles were collected  only at the Mooring1 site.  Primary Production is offered by light intensity (100, 50, 30,15, 5, 1, 0.1%)

Data were daily averaged, grid using the Stineman interpolation, and binned to 14 day intervals.  Anomalies were calculated by subtracting the interpolated value from averaged values for the corresponding 14 day interval for the 12 year period.  Stations Mooring1 and H3 have been combined.  Major stations are C1, C7, H1, H3, Mooring1, and Mooring2.

A 9 point running mean (red line) was added to the Daily Average graph  as well as a linear regression (green line); daily averaged values are represented as the blue dots.

Please note the Seasonal Cycle has a 3 point running mean applied and not as 9 point running mean as with the daily averaged graph.  Also shown in this graph is the climatology (black dashed lines) contrasted to the annual mean for the years 1997, 1998, and 1999 (blue line).

These graphs were produced by MatLab.   Interpolation is the Stineman method.

seasonal_anom_phys_c1.jpg (108143 bytes)Seasonal Anomalies

Physical, biological, taxonomic, and chemical properties of profile or integrated values over time.  The data are displayed as seasonal anomalies where the seasonal cycle (heavy black line) is augmented with positive (red fill) or negative (blue fill) anomalies along the y axis.  The data have been grid (14 day intervals) using the Stineman interpolation method and a 14 point running average was applied.

Data are presented by station: C1, Mooring1, Mooring2, and by a composite of major stations (C1, C7, H1, H3, Mooring1, Mooring2).   In the table below Mooring1 and Mooring2 are designated as M1 and M2.

Physical data are temperature, salinity, and sigma t.  Biological data are chlorophyll, primary production, and fluorescence.   Primary production is represented by the surface intensity of light penetrating the water column (S.I.), not by depth; note that the S.I. does not relate to any one depth.  Surface intensity varies spatially and temporally.

Chemical data are nitrate, phosphate, and silicate.  Profiling data for the chemical group were only collected at station Mooring1.

Depth integrated values are chlorophyll, primary production, and productivity index.

Taxonomic set 1 are all phytoplankton groups, diatom groups (centric and pennate), and heterotrophic groups (flagellates and dinoflagellates).  Taxonomic set 2 are all dinoflagellate groups (autotrophic and heterotrophic) , picophytoplankton groups (syn., red fluorescing picoplankton, prym), and flagellate groups (autotrophic and heterotrophic).  Taxonomic groups are only collected at the surface.

Physical, biological, taxonomic, and chemical properties over nominal depth and time.

Data presented in the table below has levels consistent for each depth, i.e. chlorophyll levels are 0-10 mg m-3 from 0m to 200m.  Graphs have also been created with levels specific to each depth, thus at 200m chlorophyll levels might be at 0-1 mg m-3, while surface levels are 0-10 mg m-3.
