Charles is a Postdoctoral Fellow working with Alexandra Z. Worden. He received his MSc Oceanography degree from Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris in 2008 and his Ph.D in Microbiology from the University of Paris-Sud, Orsay, Laboratory of Ecology, Systematics, and Evolution in 2010. He uses modern methods and technologies for microbial oceanography, including innovations in genomics, transcriptomics and metatranscriptomics. His main focus is on the basic biology and evolution of photoautrophic eukaryotes (e.g. prasinophytes). He also works on their interactions with viruses and how natural populations are controlled by viral infection.
Research programs at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) encompass the entire ocean, from the surface waters to the deep seafloor, and from the coastal zone to the open sea. The need to understand the ocean in all its complexity and variability drives MBARI's research and development efforts.
