R/V Point Sur

Background

The R/V Point Sur, owned by the National Science Foundation (NSF), was used to deploy and recover several moorings, but its primary focus was to deploy the day and night autonomous underwater vehicles. The Point Sur was also outfitted with its own intrumentation. The Point Sur had a vessel-mounted Narrow Band ADCP operating at 150 khz. It is manufactured by RD Instruments and it was mounted in the hull of the ship directly at mid-ships. The unit was recessed into a void so that it did not protrude past the contour of the ship's hull. This void was lined with an acoustically opaque substance called Techthane.

A SeaBird Electronics Thermosalinograph (SBE 21) and a Turner Designs (10-AU) fluorometer were part of the underway system.  All metrological sensors were manufactured by R.M. Young and there were dual GPS systems by Ashtech and Magnovox (now Leica). A SeaBird Elctronics 911 Plus profiling CTD with dual conductivity and temperature sensors was used aboard the R/V Point Sur during MUSE. The profiling cage was also outfitted with a Beckman dissolved oxygen sensor, a Chelsea fluorometer (Aquatracka), a WetLabs transmissometer, and a Biospherical PAR sensor.
