Abstract:
The sensor suite on the ROV Ventana consisted of a Falmouth Scientific micro-CTD, a Sea Tech 25 cm path transmissometer operating at 660 nanometers, and a pumped Sea-Bird model 13 oxygen sensor with a Beckman type membrane. Data were acquired at a nominal rate of 4 Hz, then averaged and archived in 15 second bins.
Purpose: These data were collected for oceanographic research.

On the ship, data is retrieved from the wire by a VXWorks realtime operating system and the plnavproc program which samples the data several times a second. While the data still resides on the R/V Point Lobos, a program called rovctd averages the data into 1 second intervals and flags when the ROV is in the water. Logged by the script, rovctdlogr, the data is then written into 2-second logr files. Data in these files are taken continuously over 24-hours from midnight UTC to midnight UTC. Every night, the logr.dat files are transferred to shore for processing. That same night, dat2raw.perl converts the logr.dat files into 2 files, yyyydddvntaCTDraw.txt and yyydddvntaCTDcoef.txt. (See Native Data Set Environment for file naming convention.) When the files are converted into this new format, they are reformatted and all data points where the ROV was out of the water are thrown out. Each file contains all the dives from that one day. The raw.txt and coef.txt are files that can be found in the Original/Ships/PtLobos/rovctd directory. Then, the raw.txt and coef.txt files are converted to derived files (yyyydddvntaCTDder.txt) using the script raw2der.perl Here the data are averaged into 15 second bins and a statistics file (yyyyddddvntaCTDstat.txt) is created to show temperature, salinity, and oxygen statistics. Finally, a PV-Wave program creates profiling CTD data plots (yyyyddddvntader.gif). The der.txt, der.gif, and stat.txt files can be found in the Processed/Ships/PtLobos/rovctd directory.
